A pensioner who came across twisted and mangled safety railings littering a pavement on his daily walk is “concerned” there is no longer a barrier to protect pedestrians at the “notorious junction”.

Terence Owens, 66, noticed the obliterated railings on the corner of Woodford Road and Bedford Road in Woodford on Sunday morning.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed they did not receive any reports of an accident.

“It’s quite a notorious junction,” he said. “I walk there daily with my dog and it makes me concerned.

“It must have happened in the early hours of Sunday morning or on Saturday night. As you can see, if anybody had been standing there they would almost certainly have been killed.

“One of the railings was blown into the front garden of the dentist’s. There was some amount of debris scattered about and I found a registration plate.

“I don’t know if it was a car or a truck but whatever it was it was travelling very fast or it certainly had some weight behind it.”
