Campaigners fighting plans for “ugly” high-rise tower blocks in Walthamstow Town Square will occupy the site this weekend to send a message to the council and developers that they are not giving up.
Save Our Square will hold the event on Saturday February 24 at 1pm which will include live music and children’s activities.
In December Waltham Forest Council gave the go-ahead to Capital & Regional’s plans for four blocks, the highest which is 29 storeys high, despite overwhelming public opposition.
Chairman of Waltham Forest Trades Council Linda Taaffe said: “We are protesting the fact that our consultation was totally ignored and we want to have a say in how the town centre is redeveloped.
“We are not against the town centre being improved but we are against these ugly blocks being put up of completely unaffordable housing.
“We are expecting hundreds of people and will be handing out information and asking them to sign our petition.”
At 6pm the campaign group will show a film in Harmony Hall in Truro Road, Walthamstow, about the regeneration of estates across London.
