The Mayor of London is set to announce the first-ever London Borough of Culture at City Hall on Tuesday.

The winner will receive more than £1 million in funding to support local arts and culture projects, as well as a further £300,000 grant from the City Bridge Trust.

But who are the front-runners? Do either Waltham Forest or Redbridge have a chance of taking the crown? Here’s your guide to what to expect.

Waltham Forest

East London and West Essex Guardian Series:

What’s the case?

The birthplace of icons from Hitchcock to Beckham and the borough that produced chart-toppers like Damon Albarn, Lethal Bizzle, East 17 and even Blazin’ Squad, Waltham Forest has no shortage of examples to draw on to highlight its cultural credentials.

Who’s backing the bid?

A host of big names from across the arts and entertainment industries have put their weight behind Waltham Forest’s bid.

World-famous Leytonstone photographer David Bailey, Walthamstow choreographer Sir Matthew Bourne and former Holy Family Catholic School pupil and singer Fleur East are all lending their support to the campaign.

What are the chances?

Waltham Forest was the first borough to launch its bid and has been considered one of the frontrunners ever since.

Ladbrokes has the borough as joint-favourite with Southwark at 6/1 to take the title, although it will also face stiff competition from the likes of Croydon, Camden and Lewisham.

Redbridge

East London and West Essex Guardian Series:

What’s the case?

The borough’s This Is Redbridge campaign has sought to put local people and community groups at the heart of the bid.

Redbridge council leader, Jas Athwal, has said the scheme would help Redbridge “show off” its cultural diversity “to the rest of the country and the world”.

Who’s backing the bid?

Redbridge’s campaign perhaps lacks the star power of neighbours Waltham Forest, but dozens of local businesses, community groups, schools and charities have given their backing.

Everyone from Samaritans Redbridge, the Woodford Festival, Dagenham and Redbridge Football Club to The Duke pub in Wanstead have decided to get behind the bid.

What are the chances?

Despite carrying out its bid with relatively little fanfare compared to some of the other boroughs in the race, the bookies think Redbridge is well in with a shout.

Ladbrokes puts the borough at 8/1 to win, just outside the favourites and alongside other strong contenders such as Brent, Islington and Tower Hamlets.
