More than 10,000 fines for littering and over 1,000 fines for fly-tipping were handed out by Waltham Forest Council in 2017.

The council are cracking down on litter louts and have set up pages on their website to publicly name and shame individuals and businesses who fail to dispose of waste properly.

The council’s ‘Grimebusters’ web page shows screengrabs of CCTV footage of individuals who have been caught on camera fly-tipping or littering.

The public can anonymously report those they recognise to the council through the same site.

Similarly, the council’s ‘Named and Shamed’ site calls out businesses guilty of dumping rubbish or failing to meet hygiene standards.

In May 2016, the Government gave local authorities the power to issue fines between £150 and £400 to those caught in the act of fly-tipping.

Waltham Forest Council was one of the London Borough Councils that chose not to offer reduced fines for early payments.

The standard fine for fly-tipping is £400. The council aims to clear illegally dumped waste within 24 hours of it being reported.

Every week, the borough’s team of street cleaners clean 2,500 miles of streets, collect rubbish from 104,000 households, clean 1,650 streets and empty more than 1,500 litter bins across Waltham Forest.

Cllr Clyde Loakes, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for the Environment, said: “Waltham Forest Council has a zero-tolerance policy on littering and fly-tipping. There is no excuse for people to dump their rubbish on our streets.

“We provide a weekly rubbish and recycling collection, we have three waste and recycling centres which residents can use for free and we are the only London borough to offer an unlimited bulky waste collection for free from residents’ front door.

“So, when we catch someone ruining our environment, they can expect to receive a fine.”
