A photographer who took photos of patients undergoing surgery has returned to her former college in the hope of inspiring students to pursue medical careers.

Sanah Begum unveiled her exhibition alongside Mayor of Waltham Forest, Cllr Yemi Osho at Waltham Forest College on Thursday.

Ms Begum documented the journeys of patients from pre-op to post-op as they underwent reconstructive surgery for acid burns, cleft lips and palettes and trigger finger.

Ms Begum said: “I see my surgical images as beautiful, powerful, realistic and life-changing so they are very close to my heart. My heart pounds when I’m taking images of surgical procedures.

“For this type of work I don’t believe in editing any of these procedures captured so I kept them as authentic as possible. I am very proud to say that these are all raw - straight from the camera.”

She added: “We’ve reached our goal today to inspire, encourage and enlighten students.”

Nursing student, Ruth Poba-Puati, praised Ms Begum for doing “a great job” in capturing intimate moments in patients’ recovery journeys.

She said: “This exhibition has certainly inspired me and I feel more confident with the idea of going into a theatre operation.”

Amir Ahmed, Director at Waltham Forest College, said the images brought to life the procedures students read about in text books.

“Many students started thinking about specialist pathways and how they can make a real difference in their chosen career,” he said.
