More than 10,000 young people have cast their vote in the 2018 Youth Election and the results are in.

Kishan Sharma from Caterham High School and Malek Djitli from Chadwell Heath Academy are the newly elected Members of the Youth Parliament for Redbridge.

Ali Raja from Loxford School of Science and Technology is the Deputy Member of the Youth Parliament.

10,703 ballot papers were counted from 29 participating secondary schools and youth centres, as well as the Music Service and the Drama Centre.

The turnout was 32.5% turnout of the 11-19 years population in Redbridge.

The pair were elected from 10 possible candidates and are taking over from Magiesha Maheswaran , Tasnia Chowdhury  and George Thompson.

The UK Youth Parliament has 600 elected MPs from across the country that organise projects, run campaigns and influence decision-makers on the issues most important to young people.

The two successful Redbridge Members of Youth Parliament (MYPs) will be delegates for the young people of Redbridge and represent their views at the Youth Parliament.

Councillor Elaine Norman, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said: “We are very fortunate to have a great number of young people that care about the future of the borough and are eager to help shape it to better represent the opinions and needs of young people.

“I’d like to thank Magiesha, Tasnia and George for the hard work they put in last year and wish the best of luck to Kishan, Malek and Ali as they take up their roles and represent the young people of Redbridge.”

The MYPs will meet fellow Youth Parliament Members from across the country to share ideas and knowledge and help to influence campaigns the UK Youth Parliament is working on.
