An official topping out ceremony has been held at a landmark development of 84 apartments, the majority of which will be affordable homes.

Siskin Apartments in Dunedin Road, Leyton is a 16 storey building built by Hill on behalf of the charity Newlon Housing Trust.

Sixty apartments have been allocated for shared ownership, 11 for social rent and 12 for private sale. They are expected to be ready to move in in early 2019.

Waltham Forest Council Leader Clare Coghill was presented with a commemorative trowel by Paul Jordan, regional director of Hill and Sarah Ebanja, chairman of Newlon at a ceremony on last week.

Speaking at the event, Cllr Coghill said she felt “so proud” to meet the women who have contributed to the project.

She added: “I am delighted that this exciting new development will bring more new affordable homes to this part of the borough.

“I would like to thank Hill and Newlon for all their work on this project, which will create a major new landmark close to the centre of Leyton and on the edge of the Olympic Park.”

Ms Ebanja said the cash from the private sale homes would be reinvested into building more affordable housing.

“We are really proud of this landmark new scheme, which will provide high specification new affordable housing for local people and in our 50th anniversary year help us to raise additional funding for more affordable homes,” she said.
