Young people in Leyton were put through their paces in a special session led by some of the world’s leader mixed martial artists.

UFC athlete Paige VanZant and retired fighter Brad Pickett led a special masterclass with teenagers at Leyton Sixth Form College last week.

The session, which saw youngsters learn some of the basics of martial arts, was held to mark the UFC’s new partnership with charity The Prince’s Trust.

The young people were able to ask Ms VanZant and Mr Pickett questions, and also given an opportunity to watch demonstrations delivered by the UFC stars.

David Shaw, UFC senior vice president of international and content said: “The event was an enormous success.

“The young people involved responded incredibly positively to our athletes, and the fighters enjoyed sharing their own stories, as well as hearing more about the young people themselves.”

The Prince’s Trust works supporting young people between the ages of 11 and 30, who are leaving care or facing issues with homelessness, mental health problems or troubles with the law.

It offers programmes and opportunities to youngsters to help them stabilise their lives and develop their self-esteem.

Nick Godden, national head of programmes at The Prince’s Trust said: “The seminar with UFC has given young people a really exciting opportunity to hear first-hand from the athletes about the qualities and skills required to be at the top of their game.

“I’m looking forward to see how we can work with UFC in future as part of our partnership to continue to inspire and motivate young people to reach their full potential”
