Police have arrested a man on suspicion of murder following the fatal shooting of a teenager in Walthamstow.

An 18-year-old man from east London was detained on Monday after 16-year-old Amaan Shakoor was shot dead outside Walthamstow Leisure Centre in Markhouse Road on April 2.

The suspect has since been released pending further investigation.

Met officers were called to the leisure centre at around 10pm last Monday, where they found Amaan and another boy aged 15 suffering from serious injuries.

Amaan, from Leyton, died the following day in hospital from a gunshot wound to the head, while the second boy was later discharged after treatment.

DCI Gary Holmes, of the Met's Homicide and Major Crime Command, said: "It is just over one week since Amaan Shakoor was brutally murdered.

“Somebody somewhere knows who committed this terrible crime and I would urge that person to come forward and share this information with us.

"This murder has left Amaan's family completely devastated and desperate to understand why he was taken from them.

"If you know or even suspect who committed this murder then please help me to bring justice for Amaan's family and make the community a safer place for other young people."

The killing is one of three to have taken place in Walthamstow in the past month currently under investigation by Scotland Yard.

On March 14, 20-year-old Joseph Williams-Torres, was shot and killed in Essex Close, before 41-year-old Jermaine Johnson was stabbed to death in Vallentin Road on March 19.

Some 50 people have been killed in various stabbings and shootings across London since the beginning of 2018.
