A cash and carry has been closed after “horrified” health inspectors found mice scurrying around the warehouse and eating stock.

Officers from Waltham Forest Council’s food safety team found a string of serious issues during a search of Romanian Food Cash and Carry, in Trinity Road, Leytonstone.

The inspectors visited the store, based in the Hitchcock Business Centre, on March 29 following a tip-off from a member of the public.

Once inside the warehouse, officers found mice scurrying around food storage areas, and evidence of mouse droppings on the shelves and floors.

A large amount of contaminated food that would have ended up on the store shelves for sale to customers was also uncovered.

The premises was immediately closed and council officers were then granted Hygiene Emergency Prohibition Order at Thames Magistrates’ Court with £92 of costs also awarded to the council.

Romanian Food Cash and Carry is required to remain closed and to undertake pest control treatment in order to eradicate the mouse infestation.

A council spokesman said: “This is another great result for our food safety team.

“They have a track record of success in finding and taking action against unscrupulous food businesses who jeopardise the health of their customers.

“We will always push for the harshest penalties for those who endanger residents.”
