A council has been accused of “woeful neglect” as pot holes get worse.

Residents are calling on the council to fix the huge potholes that have opened up in Wanstead Place, Wanstead, and have been poorly patched over.

Scott Wilding, a blogger who has lived in Wanstead for 35 years, said: “The condition of the roads in Wanstead has got steadily worse over the past four years. The pot holes in our roads and ponding on the pavements show a woeful neglect in maintaining basic infrastructure.

“Wanstead is a well-used high street with high footfall. People come to eat, shop and drink in our area and we are lucky to have a thriving community.

Wanstead Place in Wanstead Village is one of the worst affected areas.

“Greater investment in the public realm will only bring even more people to town centres, spending more in local businesses and better-quality paving will make it easier for those in wheelchairs or with buggies to navigate.”

Mr Wilding cited Redbridge’s Labour-led council’s investments in new swimming pools, temporary staff and car allowances.

He believes this proves the council have enough money that they could spend on basic infrastructure, but they are choosing to spend it on other things.

He added: “It’s time we invested in things that are used by the many, and not the few.”

A council spokesman said: "We commit substantial money to roads maintenance and are investing over £4 million a year to ensure they are in the best possible condition.

"We regularly inspect our road network and Wanstead Place has been earmarked for future resurfacing but if more immediate works are necessary to improve the road they will be carried out.”
