Protesters from Walthamstow joined hundreds of others outside Parliament to demand a stop to UK air strikes in Syria.

Theresa May’s government decided to launch airstrikes in Syria on Monday April 16.

The strikes are in response to the use of chemical weapons, allegedly launched by Syrian President Assad, on Saturday April 7.

Protestors argue the UK’s decision to join France and the USA in airstrikes in the region is “another bloody aggression.”

Protesters were as loud as possible to make sure those debating in Parliament could hear them.

The protest took place on Parliament Square while the House of Commons debated whether Theresa May had been right to launch military action without consulting MPs first.

Radmila Montenegro, from Walthamstow, joined the protesters.

She said: “This protest was one of many outside Parliament. I am very much against getting involved and dealing with other countries in this way.

“Nothing shows that our intervention makes things better, we have brought terrorists to power in Libya and other areas in the region. There is a shocking lack of clarity about what we want to achieve in the region.”

Protestors were a "cross section of society"

A number of MPs came out to meet and talk with protesters, who were being as loud as possible in the hope that those debating inside Parliament would hear them.

Ms Montenegro said: “The hope was that someone would listen. There is a very strong feeling nationally against this attack. As people we need to say what we feel about it.

“The mood is very anti-war. This is done in our name. We have been involved in Syria for a long time on the wrong side.”

The protest included what Ms Montenegro called “a real cross-section of society”, with people of all ages and professions joining the crowd.

The protest lasted from 5:30pm through until 7pm on Monday April 16.

The debate in Parliament lasted until after 11pm.
