Cancer patients undergoing or recovering from treatment are encouraged to sign up for a charity programme to help them get back on their feet.

The Macmillan Social Prescribing Service is offering people in Waltham Forest free employment and welfare advice, psychological workshops and fitness classes.

Launched in 2016, the programme delivered by the Bromley by Bow Centre for residents of east London has so far helped more than 630 people.

Patients are invited to join support groups run the service to meet others living through similar circumstances.

Ed Tallis, Macmillan head of development for London said: “Every day, over 90 people in London hear the devastating news that they have cancer.

“The number of people living with and beyond cancer is set to nearly double by 2030, which will result in thousands more people in the area needing medical, practical and emotional support.

He added: “We are delighted with the results from a recent evaluation of the service showing that 91 per cent of people who accessed the service are satisfied or very satisfied with the support they have received.”
