A college will hold a ‘Big Bang Fair’ to show youngsters where science and maths could take them in their future careers.

To celebrate National Science Week, Leyton Sixth Form College has invited primary and secondary school students from across Waltham Forest to take part in hands-on activities and workshops.

The mayor of Waltham Forest, Cllr Yemi Osho, will officially open the fair in Essex Road at 10am on Friday, April 27 and it will run until 3pm.

It will include demonstrations based on science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) and exhibitions featuring dinosaur fossils, meteorites, DNA extraction and robots.

Immersive Theatres will erect a seven metre dome at the fair in which schoolchildren can learn about astronomy.

Principal Gill Burbridge said she hopes the fair will encourage pupils to study science-based subjects at third level and consider working in STEM fields.

“We are really excited to be hosting this amazing Big Bang event,” said Ms Burbridge.

“STEM subjects are an important part of our curriculum and we aim to provide as many opportunities as possible for young people to extend their learning beyond the classroom.

“We really hope the exhibits and activities will encourage people of all ages and develop their interest in scientific fields that teach us about our relationship to the world – past, present and future - and further our understanding of space and astronomy.”

She added: “Curiosity is at the heart of The Big Bang Fair.”

The event will be supported by London Metropolitan University, Queen Mary University of London, Kingston University, Royal Holloway University and the STEM organisation.
