FULL details of controversial plans to build retirement homes in a supermarket car park have been made public.

In January Waltham Abbey residents got wind of a large retirement complex to be built outside Tesco in Sewardstone Road by McCarthy & Stone.

Developers held a public exhibition on January 26, where initial details of the 24 one-bed and 28 two-bed apartments build were made public.

The proposal was not immediately popular with residents.

Green activist David Plummer pointed to the 1,500 people on Epping Forest District Council's council house waiting list and the town's numerous existing retirement complexes as arguments against the build.

At the public exhibition 58 per cent of people found themselves agreeing with Mr Plummer in their opposition to the plans, with only 35 per cent of attendees in support.

An in-depth version of the plans has now gone live, which gives details of the building's aesthetic and structure, access and the garden.

Existing vehicle access from Sewardstone Road will remain as the main access to the site, but the overall height of the development will be reduced from that initially planned.

An enclosed communal courtyard will be built on the ground floor by 33 parking spaces.

The plans read: "The main garden space, for residents, will be located along the northern and eastern edge of the site. The eastern edge will be planted to create a dense boundary.

"Most of the residents garden will be laid to lawn to allow for residents to walk round through to the feature area and seating areas.

"A number of spaces will be created through landscape design, including a feature area which includes a pergola, residents seating, sensory planting and ornamental beds."
