Campaigners battling plans to build four high-rise tower blocks in Walthamstow Town Square are holding a mass rally.

Community group Save Our Square are holding the Mass Rally Against the London Clearances outside City Hall from 2pm to 5pm on Sunday, April 29.

Protesters are encouraged to bring their own banners and brooms as a symbol of the attempt to “sweep traditional London communities out of their own city”.

Save Our Square have fought a two-year campaign against developers Capital and Regional to prevent Walthamstow town square from being “trashed” in order to extend an existing shopping mall and to build four tower blocks of luxury flats – with only 30 per cent of them being affordable.

Objectors are concerned 81 mature trees will be destroyed, the children's playground will be reduced in size and moved nearer to the diesel pollution of the bus station and one third of the public open space will be permanently lost.

They also say no families on Waltham Forest's housing list of almost 8,000 will be helped by the project.
