These photos of overflowing bins blighting our streets prove we need more street cleaners, a prospective councillor says.

Scott Wilding, who is standing for election in the Wanstead Village ward next week, says the situation is at breaking point.

The Conservative candidate saw a number of overflowing bins in the area on Monday – and says something needs to be done.

He said: “On Monday as I returned from work I saw these overflowing bins around Wanstead. While the Labour-run council promised us a cleaner borough, perhaps this is part of the reason why 50 per cent of people responding to the council’s own street commission think Redbridge is getting dirtier.

The council said the issue was rectified as soon as they were informed of it.

“Labour promised us more bins to help clean up Wanstead. But that’s only part of the solution. We need more bins emptied more often along with more street cleansing. As the borough increases in population, and Wanstead remains a key leisure destination, scenes like this will only increase.

“The council needs to step up and look after the basics. You could fill a new swimming pool with the amount of litter left overflowing in our bins!”

A council spokesman said: “We want to ensure a high-quality service and to keep our streets clean, which is why the many hundreds of litter bins we have installed are emptied regularly throughout the day.

“Unfortunately, the collection from these two [bins] in Wanstead was missed on Monday but this was quickly rectified the following day as soon as we were notified.”
