A mum and daughter have raised thousands of pounds for charity by running the London Marathon to mark their ‘centenary’.

Stefi Janikiewicz of Walthamstow ran the 26.2 miles on Sunday, April 22 alongside her mother Tess to celebrate their 30th and 70th birthdays.

The pair will donate the cash they raised to The Children’s Society which helps vulnerable youngsters across the UK affected by poverty, abuse and neglect.

Stefi, who is the head of inclusion at Thomas Gamuel Primary School in Walthamstow’s Colchester Road, said: “I am really proud to have completed this year’s London Marathon with my mum for The Children’s Society. It feels amazing.

“It was a very hot day but knowing that we were helping the charity to support vulnerable children and young people gave us the inspiration to see it through.”

While Stefi is new to running long distances, Tess, a mother-of-five who is a retired teacher, is a seasoned runner and completed her first marathon at the age of 56.

The duo have so far raised more than £5,400 for The Children’s Society.

Laura Balcombe, the charity’s supporter engagement officer said: “Completing the London Marathon is a truly remarkable accomplishment and Stefi and Tess’ outstanding efforts will help to make a real difference to young people’s lives.

“We are so grateful to Stefi and Tess, along with all of our London Marathon runners for taking part and supporting our vital work.”
