Nearly four hundred cyclists turned out for a county wide cycle ride in aid of the Essex & Herts Air Ambulance (EHAAT) on Sunday, April 30.

Starting from the cricket field at Earls Colne airfield, the cyclists tackled routes of three, 20, 50 or 80 miles that took in many of the most scenic parts of the area.

Riders on the longest routes passed through Wakes Colne, Steeple Bumpstead, Wethersfield, and Castle Hedingham before returning to the start.

The peloton included an array of different standards, including club cyclists, families and one father and son team on a tandem who completed the 80 mile route.

There was also a large turnout from the family of an airlifted patient,

Fay Boissieux, event manager at the air ambulance, said: “It was great to see so many cyclists turn out for this event despite the grey skies.

"The day has raised over £12,500, with more sponsorship still to come, which will help keep our life-saving work service operational, so we’d like to thank everyone who took part.

“The 80 mile route, new for this year, was particularly popular with those who wanted to cycle on roads used by the Tour de France on its last visit to the UK.

“Thanks too to all our volunteers who helped to marshal the event. Many spent hours standing at road junctions to make sure that everyone got back safely.”
