An internationally-renowned soprano hailed as “a rare vocal phenomenon of this century” will perform at a concert in Waltham Forest this week.

Nelly Miricioiu is expected to draw crowds to Highams Park on Friday (May 4) for a performance the event hosted by Forest Recorded Music Society.

Born in Romania, Ms Miricioiu started singing at the age of five and made her debut at Iasi Romanian Opera, aged 18.

After fleeing the communist regime in 1972, she settled in England and the following year she made her Covent Garden debut in Pagliacci opposite Jon Vickers. She went on to perform at major opera houses in Europe and the United States.

In recent years the singer has gained a reputation as one of the most respected voice teachers in the UK.

Chairman Andrew Golds said: “We are delighted to welcome Nelly to our society and look forward to a most entertaining evening with her.”

The concert will be held at All Saints Church hall in Church Avenue, Highams Park and tickets are £5 each and £3 for members.

Guests are asked to arrive by 7.15pm for a 7.30pm start.
