Pupils at a Leytonstone school were given an insight into how local government works by the mayor of their borough.

Children in Years 3 to 10 from Buxton School in Cann Hall Road visited the chamber at Waltham Forest Council’s offices in Walthamstow last week.

After the Mayor of Waltham Forest, Cllr Yemi Osho explained to the youngsters the role mayors across the country play in local democracy, they quizzed her on topics such as national politics and the history of the council.

Nine-year-old Abas Said said: “It was really cool, it gave me the opportunity to see how our country works, by meeting the mayor and asking her questions.

“I learned about the mayor’s role in our borough and I found the whole trip very interesting.”

Nikita Vaicekauskas, 13, added: “I found out that being the mayor is an extremely prestigious role as they are in a position to help everyday people.

“I think it is a great privilege for us to come to the council chamber and learn about local politics at such a young age, it was an amazing opportunity.”

The group of pupils included members of the primary phase politics club and members of Buxton Voices, the school council.

It was one of many visits to the town hall that the school has planned to educate pupils about what goes on within the walls of the building.

Buxton’s community schools leader, Carol Molony said: “The aim of this trip was to show pupils how local democracy works in real life, while we also recreate the process in school through Buxton Voices.

“We want students to become an active part of the democratic process, which is such a core part of our country’s values.”
