A group fighting plans to build four high-rise tower blocks in Walthamstow Town Square will lobby councillors for a full council vote on the scheme.

Save Our Square E17 has spent more than a year campaigning against Capital & Regional’s plans for The Mall in Walthamstow which were approved by the council’s planning committee in December.

The campaigners will gather on the steps of Waltham Forest Town Hall at 6pm on Thursday (May 24) ahead of the first full council meeting since the elections.

Nancy Taaffe, chairman of the group, said in a statement: “Save Our Square E17 wrote to all prospective councillors before the election to ask them what their positions were on the plans - we kept all their responses.

“We understand that a full council meeting has never actually taken a vote on these plans.

“We believe that such a vote should take place and we will be talking to councillors on the town all steps to ask them to convene one.”

In March the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, backed the plans which include 500 homes, 30 per cent of which will be ‘affordable’, and 8,000 square metres of retail space.

Around £200 million of private investment is expected from the scheme and it will create 350 permanent retail jobs.
