A council will use a checking database to name and shame rogue landlords.
The Mayor of London’s Rogue Landlords and Letting Agents Checker database involves councils regularly submitting records of successful prosecutions and fines against rogue landlords.
These records are made available for the public to see online so they can check if their landlord has been prosecuted in the past, or report their landlord for malpractice.
The aim is to stop these landlords them from moving from borough to borough and continuing corrupt practices.
Now Redbridge has signed up to the scheme, a total of 33 London boroughs are involved and the service is completelly free to use.
Cllr Farah Hussain, cabinet member for housing and homelessness, said: “We are determined to clamp down on rogue landlords and this public database will help us to do just that.
“It will provide valuable information to people seeking private rented accommodation in our borough and across London and help to discourage dishonest landlords and make them more responsible.”
The council have already submitted records to the database and members of the public can check these on the database’s website.
