Redbridge and Waltham Forest councils will go Green for Grenfell today.

To commemorate one year on since the Grenfell Tower fire, Redbridge Council will illuminate their office building bright green this evening to mark ‘Green for Grenfell’ day.

Waltham Forest Council illuminated its town hall in Walthamstow last night.

In Redbridge, the 12th floor of Lynton House in Ilford, along with the street lights outside the town hall and the Kenneth More Theatre, will be lit green in support of the event, which has been organised by campaign group Grenfell United.

The national event has been designed to celebrate a spirit of unity and collaboration. It will reflect how the community around the tower and all over the UK came together to help each other after the tragedy last year.

Buildings in London such as the BT Tower and London Eye will also be illuminated, creating a memorial across the capital.

The Grenfell community has asked schools to wear something green, fundraise for local causes and share their stories, photos and projects from the day on social media using the hashtag #GreenForGrenfellDay.

Both councils will also observe a minute’s silence at 12 noon today to remember those who lost their lives and others affected by the Grenfell Tower fire.

For those who would like to attend, Waltham Forest Council's minute silence will be held at the flagpole outside the Magistrates Court on the town hall campus.

Redbridge Council leader Cllr Jas Athwal said: “The Grenfell fire was an unimaginable tragedy that shocked our country to the core. One year on it’s time to reflect and remember and I hope others across the borough will join us in supporting this important initiative.”

Waltham Forest Council leader, Cllr Clare Coghill, said: “We are paying our respects to those who were killed and their families, as well as to the brave emergency services who rushed to help without a thought for their own personal safety.

“The Grenfell Tower fire was a tragedy that should never have happened. On Friday, I strongly encourage schools and community groups to take part in Green for Grenfell Day to raise money for local initiatives.”
