The council is backing a primary school’s bid to win development funding and is urging the public to vote for them.

Stoneydown Primary School in Walthamstow is hoping to build an outdoor classroom and has applied to development giants Jewson for funding as part of their Build Better Communities scheme.

The classroom will serve as a retreat, away from the noise of the playground for all children, but will particularly benefit children with special needs, those with learning difficulties and those suffering from bereavement.

The space will also host English-booster sessions for members of the local community who want to improve their literacy.

A total of 66 per cent of Stoneydown’s pupils arrive in or nursery or Reception unable to speak English and the space will be open both before and after school in the hope it will play a huge role in the local community.

Parents and children have been supporting the project by fundraising; baking cakes and holding raffles.

The plans for the outdoor classroom were designed by children from Stoneydown’s school council.

Waltham Forest Council tweeted about the bid and said: “Vote for Stoneydown Park Primary by 20 June. They’ve been shortlisted a Building Better Communities prize from builders merchant Jewson for an outdoor library. Your vote could change this photo to a lovely new colourful reading room!”

Voting closes on June 20, click here to cast your vote: http://www.buildingbettercommunities.co.uk/community-project/community-project-entry-2080/.
