People can learn new skills – including how to start a fire and build a shelter – as part of London National Park City Week.

Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan is calling on Londoners to take part in a number of free events across the capital during the first-ever London National Park City Week from July 21 to 29.

Many are taking place in Waltham Forest.

As part of this week on July 28, Forest Knights bush craft school will be hosting an event in Lloyd Park to teach young people how to survive in the wilderness.

Wayne Jones who owns Forest Knights said: “Outdoor skills are really important for young people.

“This event is a way of getting young people involved who wouldn’t normally get involved.

“It’s about teaching them skills that their ancestors used.

“A lot of young people have more mental health and anger issues and we are hoping this will help them take time to reflect.

“The event will be a lot of fun and show people that there are lots of ways to use their skills, people can take a lot from it.”

There will be 280 events across the capital in total with the London-wide event aiming to connect more people to nature and improve people’s health and wellbeing.

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said: “National Park City Week is a fantastic way for Londoners of all ages to get in touch with their green side and to explore parks and green spaces that we may not normally visit.”
