Teachers at a college in Waltham Forest have been nationally recognised for their commitment to helping students.

The education, leisure and wellbeing team at Leyton Sixth Form College won a silver award at this year’s Pearson Teaching Awards.

The winners were announced on Friday, June 22, to coincide with ‘Thank a Teacher Day’.

The team at the college in Essex Road, Leyton, was selected from thousands of nominations and will join fellow award winners at the final of the Pearson Teaching Awards in London on October 21.

Principal Gill Burbridge said: “This is a fantastic achievement on the part of the education, leisure and wellbeing team.

“It acknowledges not just the innovative and high quality teaching and learning experiences that they provide our students on a diverse range of vocational programmes, but also the wealth of extra-curricular activities and opportunities that they organise.

“The team embody fully the culture and ethos which define Leyton Sixth Form College as a whole.

“They have worked together to provide a stimulating learning environment which fosters curiosity, builds confidence and promotes a strong sense of community, shared values and a common purpose.”

The Pearson Teaching Awards were founded in 1998 by Lord Puttnam to recognise the life-changing impact an inspirational teacher can have on the lives of young people.

Rod Bristow, president of Pearson UK, said it is “vital” that those making a difference in education are recognised and celebrated.

He added: "They should feel extremely proud of their achievements and join an inspirational group of teaching award winners from the past two decades. It’s an honour for Pearson to support these Awards each year.”
