More than 225 firefighters are tackling a huge grassland fire.

Firefighters are at Wanstead Flats after the blaze broke out shortly after 4pm this afternoon. London Fire Brigade said it received more than 110 calls.

Pictures from the scene earlier showed huge plumes of smoke and 40 fire engines are in attendance from Leytonstone, Walthamstow, and Hainault.

The fire can be seen across North London, with people seeing the smoke from Edmonton and Alexandra Palace.

There is believed to be no immediate risk to life or property.

London Fire Brigade Group Manager Rob Davies who is at the scene said: "Keep windows and doors shut, a lot of smoke is drifting across roads and while there is no immediate threat to property you should avoid the area if you can."

The A114 is closed alongside Wanstead Flats in both directions.

Cann Hall police are urging members of the public to stay away from the area.

The force tweeted: "As tempting it is to get closer for a look please stay away from the area. @LondonFire are extremely busy fighting it, but fire can be unpredictable, spread quickly, or even surround you."
