'Sex slur' councillor to appeal

CLLR Miranda Grell is set to appeal against a judgement that she falsely claimed an election rival was a paedophile during last year's local election.

The 29-year-old was convicted on two counts of the Representation of the People Act, disqualifying her from holding elected office, when she appeared at Waltham Forest Magistrates' Court last Friday.

A statement on her website said: "An official appeal has now been lodged by my lawyers, as we do not accept the Friday September 21 judgement.

"A campaign is being set up to raise funds for the legal appeal and also to raise awareness of our fight for justice."

She added: "I have been humbled to receive so many phone calls, text messages, visits, letters and emails showing my family and I support. It is giving me and my family a lot of strength at a difficult time."

Ms Grell said she will reveal the full details of her campaign and how people can help once all the arrangements have been finalised.

I really don't understand what she is appealing against, even if you believed her story, that she said her opponent had a 19 you Malaysian boyfriend rather than the alleged 14 you boyfriend. Then it still shows she was willing to use the sexuality of her opponent as a weapon against him. She must believe the the electorate in Leyton are more willing to vote for a heterosexual candidate, so therefore she must believe that homophobia exists in the ward and she can profit from it.

A lot of people would agree with fran , my-self included. Lets hope the appeal judge does. Hopefully whoever replaces her is there for the people and not just for there selfs. ..... Micheal the reason she has not replyed to your email is because she is RUDE and so up her self she doesn,t feel she has to.

I’ve met Miranda Grell at several events over the past three or four years.

After her Master’s Degree in Industrial Relations, her employers in a few years have included the
• Trades Union Congress
• Commission of the European Communities, and
• Advisory Conciliation and Arbitration Service
This would be an impressive history for someone twice her age.

It doesn’t sound like someone who would commit the offences she has just been convicted of. The gallery of Waltham Forest Magistrates Court was full of people nearly as shocked as she was by the verdict. She will be getting a great deal of support in the period leading to her Appeal being heard.

She admitted saying her opponent had a 19 year old malasian boyfriend, She admitted this! Why did she feel the need to discus the sexuality of her opponent, i made it clear in my original post that even if you give her the benefit of the doubt in respect to her saying the bf was 14 instead of 19 (which let me remind you she admitted), she still knew this was a lie she KNEW her opponenets partner is 38. What are you supporting are you supporting her appeal againt the fine, the appeal against saying her opponment had a 14 partner, the FACT is she admitted lying, and lying is WRONG. If you want to support soemone who admitted they told a mistruth that your business but dont suggest that her employment history is infact evidence against her behavour,

This woman is a disgrace and should be imprisoned. As for her cronies commenting about how great she is they should be ashamed of themselves. We need to remove the bigots like her from public life. I thought racism and homophobia were no longer acceptable in this country? Or is there one rule for her and another for everyone else? Shame.
