Make drivers sit a re-test

DRIVING standards in general have plummeted in recent years, not only through the introduction of mobile phones but also all the other must-have 'toys' aimed at the modern motorist, for example radar speed-trap detectors, satellite navigation systems, high power car audio systems and other distractions like DVD players in 4x4s and TVs in coaches that can be seen by other drivers.

Multi-tasking while driving doesn't work.

As speed increases reaction time reduces.

If other distractions are added to the equation - it can only end in tears.

The law on mobiles as it stands is pretty unenforceable. This isn't helped by the reduction in police (traffic) numbers.

A harsher punishment may act as a deterrent. Basically if you have to use a mobile, or speed, or drink your tea while driving, you can't drive safely.

So you can't drive - and if you're caught, the privilege is removed. Then it's back to being a learner again - with a restricted licence and hefty fine of course.

It seems crazy to me that we have to test our vehicles every year but the driver's standard is allowed to drop without being checked after passing the initial driving test.

All drivers should be re-tested every three years to maintain a better standard. If you think you're a good driver - take an advanced test now. You will certainly learn things the other drivers don't know about.
