ANGER over ex-councillor Miranda Grell's behaviour during last year's Waltham Forest Council elections has been voiced by gay rights campaigners.

Following the failure of her appeal against her conviction for smearing Barry Smith and telling people he was a paedophile, the Labour Campaign for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Rights (LGBT) has issued the following statement: "The Labour Party has a proud record of equal rights and promoting gay equality.

"Over the last ten years the Labour government has transformed Britain into a more equal and tolerant place.

"We are furious that a Labour candidate, Miranda Grell, was willing to use homophobia to get elected.

"Discussing the sexuality of her opponent and spreading innuendo about his relationship was a disgrace and made her unfit for office.

"To also tell lies that he was a paedophile is completely unforgivable and not only affected her opponent's political career but his personal life too.

"While LGBT Labour has not commented during the trial and appeal, we have been in private contact with senior officers of the Labour Party to express our anger at her behaviour and demand that the Party treat these allegations very seriously.

"Now that the appeal has been dismissed and her conviction upheld we feel it is important that party take immediate action."

Cllr Katie Hanson, co-chair of LGBT Labour said: "This kind of behaviour has no place in a civilised society and brings both the party and politics in general into disrepute. Homophobia is completely at odds with everything the Labour party stands for.

"She has had her chance to defend herself and she has been found guilty.

"Equality is not optional for Labour Party members or representatives and all forms of homophobia are unacceptable in our Party.

"Following the failure of the appeal there should be immediate action"

Barry Smith told the court at Grell's trial that he and his partner were forced to move away from Waltham Forest because of the abuse he enduring in the aftermath of the election.

I think its very sad that Barry Smith and partner have had to move because of that disgraceful woman, now she has shown exactly what she is and everyone knows,I think she should move away herself, away from leyton.Because people will not forget what she has done in this borough,we have enough bad press.

This is a disgraceful case, and I'm sorry that someone so young and promising has turned out so badly.

But it's not out of place with this Labour-led council. Waltham Forest is up to its eyes in sleaze, what with the revelations of cronyism, the breaking of its own rules, the destruction of library books (which the council has a different explanation for every time I open the paper). In total, the contempt it shows for the voters.

I'm sick of it. These people don't represent the Labour party I've supported all my life. And I'm not interested in any of their friends who stand in Miranda Grell's place.

The trouble is, the Lib Dems in this coalition may complain about the Labour group, but they always obediently vote with them. So I'm not wasting a vote on them.

Who will stand, as an independent, to try to get this council back on track? They may be alone to start with, but I foresee plenty more councillors joining their numbers in the next elections.

I so agree with Ex-Labour voter. I am also finished with voting for Loakes and co. in this borough. Why do the LibDems so tamely vote through all those Labour policies? It was one of their own who was smeared by Grell. Yes, let's have an independent stand to send a message to this arrogant council.

Someone needs to get an independent onto the council. Whoever starts it, I will give my support and my time to them. I wouldn't be confident enough to stand for the seat myself, but I would be confident enough to be in the team.
Should anyone want to start, contact the local paper, give their contact details and I'll be on the phone as soon as I see this begin. There should be plenty of people against this current book-burning, Arts-hating, Grell-employing, overpaid council to stand behind you.

Having read your newspaper from start to finish, I was suprised that there was no artical or comment, regarding the NOOR UL Islam Trust's meeting and dinner at the asembly hall on the 28th November. Representertives were invited from all religions and all walks off life and found an understanding of the Islam Community in Waltham Forest. There should be more meetings like this to help in making waltham Forest a multi-Cultural Society.

Yes the New Lab / Lib Dem coalition are thick as thieves. I think we need a broad alliance of Respect, Greens and Independents to stand against this shower. A broad alliance of those who want to buy books for the community and not burn them, who build social housing instead of selling then off and who regard the money spent on consultants to be scandalous ie the majority of WF folk. Getting 1 or 2 Independents would be good but not enough to change the council. It is time that those of us of a like mind concentrate on what we have in common instead of our - often minor - differences.
