DEATHS from fires are at their lowest levels since the 1950s but a watchdog has warned fire services about their lack of diversity.

The Audit Commission has rated and slated every fire service in Britain and their report was launched yesterday.

They said London Fire Brigade is 'improving strongly' since their last inspection in 2006 and gave the capital's brigade three out of four for their use of resources and received the same rating for their overall service assessment.

The Audit Commission's Chairman Michael O'Higgins said: "Today's assessment reveal a positive picture of fire fighting across England, with fewer fires taking place across the country and deaths from fires at their lowest levels in 50 years.

"For fire services to continue to improve we will need to see even greater targeting of resources at vulnerable communities and we will need to address the lack of diversity in the fire workforce.

"This is important if fire services are to effectively communicate messages about fire safety and prevention to local people, and reach people from a wide range of ethnic backgrounds, some of whom are at high risk from fire deaths, with those messages."

London Fire Commissioner Ron Dobson said: "We have built on the successes of previous years and it's fantastic to see the improvements we've put in place recognised with this exceptional rating."

"I'm delighted that the external assessors have recognised the high quality of the services that the London Fire Brigade and the Authority provides.

"We are committed to public safety and always looking at new ways of achieving our overall aim of making London a safer city."

"Diversity"? Is this political correctness on the march again?

"Targeting" recruitment is without doubt itself the practice of discrimination. "Equal opportunity" should mean just that.

Read the quote again it says,

"For fire services to continue to improve we will need to see even greater targeting of resources at vulnerable communities and we will need to address the lack of diversity in the fire workforce"

The statement address two separate issues, the first is targeting resources to vulnerable communities, the second it a lack of diversity in the workforce. It does not say as you have in your offensive misrepresentation that the LFB is 'targeting' recruitment.

Shame on you, how dare you act to misrepresent the head of the Fire Brigade, when men like yourself act to undermine our great and proud institutions you undermine the work and effort done by all our staff. Shame on you!

Jez, I note this is the second time in two days you've had to stick up for people that day in and day out put their life on the line for Londoners. As I'm not aware of how frequently you monitor these pages, let me just assure you that Mr Hickey is some angry old Tory who has no justification to comment on anything in this borough and yet continues to do so week in and week out. He's just bitter for some reason and decides to spit his vitriol on these comment pages. Obviously Chigwell is so perfect he feels little need to whinge regarding things closer to home...

I am in no way disrepecting the fire brigade as I believe that they do a marvellous and highyly commendable job. My point was the whole minority recruitment issue. Nowadays if you are a law abiding, tax paying white male you are victimised, look at the article I have included and it is a perfect example.

Graham without a surname. This just happens to be posted on the Waltham Forest pages, but it is from the Fire Commissioner for London whose empire includes not only Waltham Forest but also the City of London and 31 other London boroughs.

Exclusion is discrimination.
