WALTHAM Forest council leader Clyde Loakes has criticised proposals to close six post offices in the borough.
The Post Office has announced plans to close 169 branches in London as part of a wider move to shut 2,500 across the UK because of rising losses.
Branches in Hall Lane, Chingford, Grove Green Road, Leytonstone and Leyton High Road are listed.
And three branches in Walthamstow, in Forest Road, Orford Road and Chingford road, also face the axe.
Cllr Loakes said: "Like many people in our community, I am angry that six of our local post offices have been earmarked for closure.
"They are a vital resource for residents who rely on local post offices for financial services.
"There is a tendency to see post office closures as a rural issue, but that is just not right.
"Post offices are vital to city communities like Waltham Forest."
A six-week public consultation has now opened into the plans.
