THE building on the site where Tesco unsuccesfully applied to build a supermarket will be demolished.

The retail giant will begin knocking down the Old Swiftflow Centre, which they own, in Jubilee Avenue today (Monday, March 17).

Tesco say they have decided to demolish the building for health and safety reasons.

The store's contractors Metro will remove asbestos and then knock down the former C&A building, which is regularly targeted by vandals.

The retailer was refused permission to build a superstore in June last year by the then Communities and Local Government Secretary of State, Ruth Kelly, and the planning inspector of a public inquiry.

Ms Kelly and the inspector argued that the store would be out of keeping with the Victorian and Edwardian buildings in Highams Park and the proposed store would be too big.

A Tesco spokeswoman refused to comment on what will be built on the development, but said the company will try to minimise disruption to residents.

Hmmmm about the only thing unsafe about the old Swiftflow building is its effect upon Tesco's profits. Expect to see a planning application for loads of nasty little flats, followed by a swift and lucrative sale to a house builder, sometime soon.

Its nice to hear that a major supermarket was refused permission to erect another store, but I find it somewhat cynical for Government officials to mention Victorian and Edwardian buildings as a reason for the refusal when the area in question is a modern industrial site!! I have seen beautiful old buildings destroyed all over London and then replaced by festering boils of modern archtecture. As E4 cynic comments, watch out for a ugly block of flats to pop up in
Jubilee Avenue SOON!!

Whats that about? Maybe Tesco can pay for spelling lessons.

However, it was typed on here using a computer. Doesnt the spellcheck work?

MrKhalid what are they paying you?
Low rent to cancel out the higher council tax for road repairs?
Air con in their new flats?

Poison the local residents with all the pollution from car. The residents, who lives near especially the Council Residents are old, got children or are at ill health.

This is a residential area and we do not want any more traffic, the road now is bad enough. Tesco don’t care about anything!
