A COUNCILLOR found guilty of beating his wife has today been ordered to do community service work and to pay costs.

Lib Dem Imran Abrahim was found guilty of common assault at a hearing last month.

Magistrates heard how Cllr Abrahim punched and slapped his partner Binish Karamet during a row on November 18.

The maximum sentence for common assault is six months in jail.

Cllr Abrahim was today given an order meaning he will have to do 120 hours of work in the community.

He was also ordered to pay £200 to Ms Karamet and £300 legal costs.

But Cllr Abrahim will not automatically lose his council seat.

Council rules state that he would be barred only if his sentence is three or more months in jail.

Pathetic. No wonder men think they can get away with it. He can go on getting about £20,000 a year as a councillor, so he'll hardly notice the £500.

Yeah, he would be great dishing out advice to a battered mum! Resign!

This man is disgusting and how dare he continue to be a councillor, he should be kicked off the council immediately. He is a disgusting representation of Waltham Forest.

Ian, Wigan says...

Notice the maximum sentence for beating your wife is 6 months in prison. However if your kid refuses to go to school the maximum is 51 weeks in prison. This was imposed by Blair. Does it surprise anyone?

Probably the Mayor of Waltham Forest (Mayor ALI) who is a Magistrate also who has just be convicted of failing to send his daughter to school! Two pea in a pod!

What does Mr Loakes have to say about this? Exacty how does this man staying on the council uphold the council's so called commitment to equalities and reducing domestic violence in the borough? That poor young girl. £200! The judge shouldn't have bothered. And the communoty service "punlishment" is a joke. He is already PAID to serve the "community" as a councillor. Disgusting. People of Waltham Forest wake up! What is the world coming to when this borough's residents get more excited over the closing of a museum than a violent lunatic making a mockery of the borough.

Kelly Smith, Waltham Forest says...

Does anybody know whether members of the public can make complaints to the Standards Board for England? My husband tells me they have the power to expel councillors.

Kelly Smith, Waltham Forest says...
7:17pm Thu 10 Apr 08

And I should add that if the council don't take steps to remove this man they should be removed from having representatives on the local Victim Support Board. What a disgusting attitude towards victims of domestic violence in 2008.

Kelly Smith wrote:

I would say yes. Grounds for complaint include behaviour that brings the office (of councillor) into disrepute.

Alan Griffiths, says...
8:28pm Thu 10 Apr 08

The Crown Prosecution Service can Appeal if they think a sentence is too lenient.

Perhaps some correspondents should write to the CPS?

The Standards Board would want to consider the extent to which his position as a Councillor was part of the offence. They declined to get involved in the Christian Peoples Alliance leader urging parents to keep their chidlren off school (clearly illegal) for an event he didn't approve of : the Standards board described that as party political campaigning and not an abuse of his role as a Councillor.

The Council as a corporate body is not responsible for the convicted man's behaviour.

Getting back to the point, Ladypranksta may think beating women up is an easy "mistake" to make, but Waltham Forest council is becoming an embarrassment. This fellow beating up his wife, Miranda Grell recently disqualified for calling her political rival a paedophile, Liaquat Ali - magistrate as well as mayor - fined for taking his child out of school and then the weird story about a fine, paid or not paid?
These clowns are handsomely paid for representing us. They don't represent me!

If the Council can't sack him, why haven't the Liberal Democrats? I seem to remember that when the Miranda Grell got convicted of a gay slur against a Lib Dem Councillor, they were up in arms and - quite rightly - condemed that terrible act.Is breaking the law only wrong when one of their own Councillors is the victim instead of a vulnerable and defenceless teenager? Shame on them.

Observer, Walthamstow says...
8:55pm Fri 11 Apr 08

I agree. Over Miranda Grell they shouted to anyone would hear (and I saw on her website that she resigned even her job immediately). Now one of their own has actually PHYSICALLY ASSAULTED someone and what do we get from Keith Rayner - TOTAL SILENCE. We're all waiting Mr Rayner.

Observer, Walthamstow says...
9:03pm Fri 11 Apr 08

Apparently he was suspended when he was arrested so let's see what Keith Rayner is going to now. "Oh, he's convicted now so he can come back as a Lib Dem Councillor". This borough's local councillors are a disgrace.

technomist, walthamstow says...
3:24am Sat 12 Apr 08

Very good point Observer. Keith Rayner demonstrates minimal leadership qualities on the LbDem group and really ought to be 'moving on'. There is definitely a strong sentiment among some of his colleagues that his time is passing and it is time to be re-invigorating the LibDems with some new faces at the top. This wife-beating councilor has to be expelled, that's for sure. If Rayner won't do it, his successors should.

the way in which this case has been handled by the lib dems, just typifies how much we treated with contempt.

quite disgraceful and has brought shame on his community.

Councillor Ibrahim has to resign, he's been convicted (and following a trial; it appears that he didn't even admit to the offence and therefore put his wife through the ordeal of having to give evidence and be cross-examined). In my view if he remains in office, he is bringing the Local Authority into further disrepute. He has to go.

The LibDems hardly even count as a political party here in Waltham Forest. They just back the so-called Labour group without complaint, cutting services and awarding big pay rises to councillors. The Tories have invited the LibDems to lead a coalition and reverse some of the cuts, but they won't.
I'd understand why people voted LibDem last time as a 'third way'. Now that's looking like a wasted vote.

Getting back to the relevant subject matter, I find it absolutely appalling that Imran Abrahim retains his seat after physically abusing his wife. As a Liberal Democrat councillor what kind of domestic value is he setting for families within our community in Waltham Forest? His continuation to remain a councillor at Walthamstow Town Hall will only serve to cause steady deterioriation of the Waltham Forest Council's reputation.

If the Lib Dems had bottle they would sack him. But, as a small party they're desperate for every seat they have. Everyone who is concerned about this should email or write to the Liberal Democrats www.libdems.org.uk and disciplinary action is taken over this Cllr. In 21st century Britain it is shocking that domestic violence is still so prevalant. But, more worrying by those in positions of power and respected within the community.

Domestic Violence Facts & figures

Although domestic violence is chronically under reported, research estimates it:

Accounts for 16% of all violent crime

Will affect 1 in 4 women and 1 in 6 men in their lifetime

77% of victims of domestic violence are women.

It has more repeat victims than any other crime (on average there will have been 35 assaults before a victim calls the police)

On average, two women are killed every week by a current or former male partner

One incident of domestic violence is reported to the police every minute

(Source: Crime in England and Wales 2006/07 report)

Whatever form it takes, domestic violence is rarely a one-off incident.

More usually it's a pattern of abusive and controlling behaviour through which the abuser seeks power over their victim.

Domestic violence occurs across society, regardless of age, gender, race, sexuality, wealth and geography.

The figures show, however, that it consists mainly of violence by men against women.

Victims of domestic violence suffer on many levels - health, housing, education - and lose the freedom to live their lives how they want, and without fear.

First of all i would like to comment on the people that have commented on this story i think the general public in this borough dont have the time to come on this site and add comments, well majority of them. so i think the most of the comments that have been placed here are by family members of the those invloved for example the councillors wife. i think its fair to say that most people will tend to buy the newpaper and read the story and leasve it at that.
some people reading this comment might ask wat am i doing here, i will tell u why.

A few weeks ago i attended a function on lea bridge road i did not know what it was about i simply taged along with a friend. as the function was progressing i realised it was about this story and that the councillars wife she was present and made a little speech. as i have lived in walthamstow all my life 45 years and above you tend to know alot of people in my community and from what i can conclude from the public they were saying that this function was organised by the councillars wifes first cousin who have some hidden agendas which i dont want to mention. i personally did not find the function of any use or benefical to the community and fare too one sided, remeber there are always two sides 2 a story. a more constructive response would have been to try to reconcile husband and wife bearing in mind they have a child.

the same friend refered me to this website to read this follow on story thats why i am here and wrote this comment.

Dear Mrs Iqbal,
I don't really think it's good enough to say that someone has a 'hidden agenda' and leave it at that: if you really want to persuade people that there's some sort of injustice at work here, you need to speak more plainly, so that we can make our minds up. Otherwise all we have to go on is innuendo, and there's far too much of that on these threads already. As it is, what we DO have to go on is that a Councillor we trusted with our votes ( and a salary) has been convicted of a crime of violence against a person unable to defend themself. It's quite fair to hope that some private reconciliation may happen - that's not our business - but we still have to decide how to regard someone who is placing a claim on our trust: how can this person defend abused people who come to him for help?

Sceptic, E17 says...
2:10pm Tue 15 Apr 08

Mrs Iqbal, thanks for your comments, which sound sincere. But I don't think most of the people commenting here are relatives of the councillor's wife; I'm not, anyway! I am concerned about the hidden agenda you mention. Please tell us more.
As mdj said (and as we've noticed from stories in the Guardian, as well as our own experiences), there's a lot of this going on in Waltham Forest. the council seems to be riddled with secrecy and dishonesty and dodgy deals. It all undermines democracy, and the honest people of this borough deserve better.
Your information would be appreciated, Mrs Iqbal. We all need to bring this stuff out into the open, for all our sakes.

Tony Winchester, W-O-S says...

It's a disgrace to the people of Waltham Forest that the council did not demans his resignation and as for the Lib-dems well that defys belief in my eyes a total disrespect for the laws of our country let alone disrespect towards all women ,
