TAPES of a bugged Walthamstow flat which outline alleged conversations describing a plot to blow up transatlantic airliners were heard by a jury.

The recordings made by security services in 386A Forest Road, were played at Woolwich Crown Court on Tuesday.

The jury heard what seemed to be a discussion about American tourist destinations popular with British travellers, including Miami and California.

Five men from Waltham Forest, plus three others are accused of plotting to disguising bombs as soft drinks and smuggling them on to transatlantic flights.

All deny the charges.

Prosecutor Peter Wright QC read out transcripts of the tapes.

In one extract, dated July 31, 2006, a reference is made to Tang, a powdered sugary drink mixture, which the prosecution claim was a bomb-making ingredient.

And later a discussion appears to cover the ten most popular US holiday destinations.

At one point a man is heard saying: "hope that we can at least do a decent job.

Another is heard to reply: "My very position Bruv."

In a later alleged conversation, voices spoke about using the same or different airport terminals.

Mention was also made of testing things, in particular batteries, while the recording also picked up what appears to be a drilling sound.

The defendants are Ahmed Abdullah Ali, aka Ahmed Ali Khan, 27, of Prospect Hill, Walthamstow; Arafat Waheed Khan, 26, of Farnan Avenue, Walthamstow; Waheed Zaman, 23, of Queen's Road, Walthamstow; Ibrahim Savant, 27, of Folkestone Road, Walthamstow; and Tanvir Hussain, of Nottingham Road, Leyton.

Also accused are Assad Sarwar, 24, and Umar Islam, aka Brian Young, 29, both of High Wycombe, and Mohammed Gulzar, 26, of Barking.

The trial continues.
