IT was with great sadness I read that 1NE ( formerley and affectionately know as WACS - Waltham Forest Alcohol Counselling Service ) is to be axed (Guardian, May 1).

This facility saved my life as well as countless other lives and also helps family members to cope with the affects of alcoholism and drug addiction.

I attended WACS over eight years ago and have become a useful member of society.

It seems from what the council spokesman said the reason Turning Point was chosen is because it is a charity and it will save the council money by giving them the contract whereas WACS is funded by the council, Redbridge, the local PCT and Joint Commissioners - 50 per cent from core funders and 50 per cent from external funders.

What it boils down to is money with no thoughts for the people who use the three facilities affected by its callous decision.

If the council and Waltham Forest Primary Care Trust have any conscience they will reconsider their decision and reinstate these facilities.

They may save £60,000 in the short term but the long term consequences of their decision will cost the council and PCT a lot more through. more admissions to local hospitals from the affects of drug addiction (including alcohol which is also a drug), family units breaking up, increase in drug related crimes - the list goes on. Please council and PCT, reconsider your decision.
