A £22,000 overspend on the first two phases of the Loughton High Road enhancement scheme is "acceptable", a senior councillor has said.
Planning portfolio holder Anne Grigg was reporting on the final cost of the phases - a total of £1.37m.
Loughton Independent councillor Stephen Murray told the cabinet: "It's very easy to focus on any overspend."
But he said the total overspend was only 1.62 per cent on the scheme's budget.
"For a project of this size this (the overspend) is more than satisfactory," he said.
