TWO people were shot in a Walthamstow street just metres away from where young children were playing.

Police were called just before 2pm on June 7 to reports of a large gang of youths congregating outside a building in Wood Stret.

Two shots were fired and a teenage boy and a 35-year-old man were hit in their legs, suffering from minor injuries.

The 35-year-old worked nearby and had nothing to do with the gang.

Five teenage youths aged between 14 and 18 were arrested.

They have been bailed to return to a east London police station in July and August.

Officers have not yet found the gun used.

The shots were fired just metres from the popular Tumble in the Jungle children's centre where toddlers and older children were playing.

The organisation which runs the centre, The Soul Project, is also developing space to engage teenagers, which it hopes to fit out with computer equipment and a music studio.

Director Steve Barnabas said he was concerned people would associate the popular play centre with the shooting, which happened outside his building.

"It was a group of young people that live in the Wood Street area that were involved. It was nothing to do with any programmes we were running," he said.

"We have worked so hard to provide a safe place for children to play and we have had no trouble at all since we opened a year ago."

Mr Barnabas said none of the children or families inside the centre were affected by the shooting.

"It was just a normal day for us," he said.

A police spokeswoman said: "On arrival officers were informed two shots had been fired, causing minor injuries to two males.

"The youths had already dispersed.

"Any witnesses or anyone with information is asked to call Trident on 8217 7378 or if you wish to remain anonymous call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."

The serious failure of the police over several years to get a proper grip on crime locally and deal with the organized gangs in our midst is a scandal.

The idea that none of the children or families inside the centre were affected by the shooting and that a day when 2 people were shot in the street can be described as ' a normal day' is nonsense.

Of course people were affected - they have had a bunch of gun-toting hoodlums making their neighbourhood an insecure misery. It brings home just how insecure the borough has become under the current council and government.

Why does a major incident like this take 11 days to make the news?
Is it because it is such an everyday occurence in the borough? or
is it a coverup to protect Mr Steve Barnabas & his "Soul Project"?

Hi RayJay. I tend to agree with your first two comments, but am unsure about your third! I am not clear whether the 'Soul Project' is 'up and running yet', but all we hear from these youths is that 'we have nowhere to go' - 'we have nothing to do'! I get sick of hearing them 'whinge', trying to blame others for their low-life behaviour! At least Steve Barnabas is trying to do something for them, but will they appreciate it - I dont think so!

I hope Mr Barnabas can make a difference but I fear that he won't.
My comment about a cover up was made because I see local news being manipulated by local politicians. They appear to try to only allow news if it is positive.
Surely news like a double shooting in broad daylight is sensational news and there must have been some conspiacy to cover it up for 11 days.

Hello, I would just like to first take the time to say Thank-you to all our regular customers that took the time to call The Soul Project and obtain the facts about what happened outside our building over a week ago, and also to find out if every thing was alright. As a foster father of 4, I set up The Soul Project as a place where the family as a whole can go and feel safe, and where children can play, build up postive relationships with others and just enjoy their youth. The issues of gangs on our streets seems to be an ever growing concern, and it will only be by working together as a commuity will anything change. i got caught up between these two gangs when i tried to talk them about dealing with what ever conflict they had in a different way. I strongly believe that we all have to make a stance if we want things to change, or there will not be any place that is safe to go. We all need to protect our children in the community where they live and we will continue to provide a project that hold these values. Take Care, Steve Barnabis.

Hats off to you, Steve. I think what you're doing is highly commendable..
Good luck, long may those that share your values reap the rewards.
