LOUGHTON: Shot at police officer 'traumatised'

THE police officer involved in a shooting incident is said to be traumatised.

The officer - an acting sergeant - was in or had just got out of a patrol car when shots were fired in Pyrles Lane, close to the junction with Burney Drive, Loughton on Thursday morning.

One shot hit the driver's side of the windscreen.

A police spokesman said this morning: "We are supporting his welfare needs at the moment.

"Obviously it was a very traumatic incident for him."

A man, aged 22, and a woman were arrested about 90 minutes after yesterday's 8am incident.

They were detained in Hornchurch when a vehicle was stopped.

The man was tasered by armed officers before being arrested. He is also being questioned about a shooting on Wednesday evening.

Police were alerted when a man attended Queens Hospital, in Romford, with shotgun injuries. His condition is not thought to be life-threatening.

Police carried out a fingertip search of a stretch of Pyrles Lane as the cordoned off area was extended.

A white van seen being taken away on the back of a recovery truck does not form part of the police investigation, a police spokesman said.

The man and woman arrested are being held at separate east London police stations and will continue to be questioned today.
