THE impressive Team Great Britain medal haul, at the Beijing Olympics, bodes well for the good prospects of our own locally grown talented athletes, in all sporting disciplines, for the 2012 Games.

We will all hold the highest expectations for local and international achievement but will financial support for track and field athletes match the ambition of the technical sports in rowing, sailing and cycling?

However, in order to guarantee the best shot for our local youngsters and burgeoning medal athletes there must be more financial support and flexible access to training resources for our young athletes to enable them to gain the confidence to compete with the best.

Nothing less than a massive direct injection of Government funding into our local gyms, pools and track and field arenas, especially the popular Walthamstow Track and Pool, is acceptable, to provide the best chances in training for our local raw athletic talent.

Cllr Patrick Smith, Higham Hill Ward.
