WALTHAMSTOW: Woman beaten to death in graveyard

A WOMAN whose body was found in a churchyard was was the victim of a frenzied attack.

The body of the Melita Jo, 53, was discovered by a passer-by on Tuesday morning in the grounds of St Mary's Church in Walthamstow Village.

A post mortem revealed her murderer beat her repeatedly and the cause of death was blunt trauma to the head and body.

Mrs Jo had been sleeping rough in the area for some time.

She is from the Philippines and had been living in the church grounds.

Det Chief Insp Macdonald, who is leading the investigation, said: "This was a disgraceful and cowardly attack.

"Melita was a Filipino lady of slight build, and she has received very severe injuries from a sustained beating.

"She could not have defended herself and we do not know the motive for this.

"Although she was homeless, Melita was a religious lady, and was not a drinker or drugs abuser and was no harm to anyone.

"I urge anyone who was in and around the area of St Mary's Churchyard on Monday evening and Tuesday morning who may have heard or seen anything suspicious to contact us and assist this investigation.

"It is particularly important to get an idea when Melita was last seen alive.

"The attack could have happened anytime up until the time she was found at 8am on Tuesday."

"I would also like to speak to anyone who knew Melita who can shed light on her background to contact us.

"We do not know of any relations that she had in this country and are unable to identify close friends because she appears to have been a very private woman".

Walthamstow Village resident Karen Newstead said: I saw this women alive in the churchyard yesterday (Monday) and some of last week.

"Yesterday she had acquired a broom, and was sweeping up leaves into neat piles around the bench where she was sleeping.

"She had new green wellies on and a decent blue coat and a scarf wrapped round her face.

"She had been sleeping there on the bench for a week or so with a blue sleeping bag and a tartan umbrella for rain cover.

"The other day I saw her with two sticks walking around the yard trying to detect magnetic fields.

"I was going to ask why she was there the other day, and tell her it was a dodgy spot to hang out.

"Now she has been murdered, it is dreadful."

Anyone with information is asked to call Chingford CID on 0208 345 3985 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

There have been no arrests.

This is so awful. I saw this lady on Monday at about 4pm and she was sitting on the bench and looking very peaceful. I think she had recently returned to the graveyard after a break of a few weeks. I can't believe this has happened.

I am a bit puzzled why this lady was left to sleep on a bench outside the church in the graveyard. She seems to have been vulnerable. Were the social services not doing anything for her? Did anyone from the parish of St Mary's offer her anything better than a bench?

On the contrary she actively chose to live in the graveyard - she was offered (formally and informally) many alternatives, and as I understand it sometimes took them up - but always returned to the graveyard as she said that was where she felt safe - ironically Many people (including myself - though sadly not as often as others)from st Marys and other churches she frequented, and indeed other people in the community spent many hours enjoying her company sharing food with her and stories with her -she washed in the church and was considered part of the congregation and church family. I was extremely upset that more of an investigation into her death was not taken immediately and that the area did not seem to be treated as a crime scene within less than 24 hours - when other local murders have warranted finger tip searches and whole areas being out of bounds for a week. she clearly had many issues, and had not had an easy life - but her life was as important as everyone’s and her death needs to treated with the same respect and dignity as everyone, most importantly her horrible murder deserves as much the most thorough investigation - as anybody’s.

I would just like to second what kide17 above said, I first remember seeing this lady in the churchyard in early June. I spoke to one of St.Mary's priests about her, they had already been talking to her about what they could do for her and how they could help, but she really did just want to live there rather than be housed. I also had not seen her for a while and assume she had moved on but alas no, it just makes me so sad about this area we live in, that these kind of atrocious acts happen.

I am absolutely shocked for what has happened to Melita Jo, she seemed very harmless and vulnerable. I used to see her very often as I take my daughter to ballet classes every week at St Mary's Centre. It is really awful and scary when those kind of crimes happening at your doorstep. God help us were are we going to.

I know this is very serious but the first headline I saw about this was 'Body found in cemetery'.

I just thought why is that news? Until I read it further of course.
