TRIBUTES have been paid to murder victim Clive Enkel, a talented artist who was beaten to death at his home in Abridge last week.

Mr Enkel, 53, sold several of his paintings via the website www.aarti.co.uk.

The site is run by Margaret Horrock who described Mr Enkel as "a truly gifted artist and a private but very kind man".

Describing his death as "tragic", she added: "His paintings were so beautiful - I won't be selling them anymore but I will leave the images up on show online as a tribute to him."

Artist Robin Jackson, a member of Abridge Art Society who lives in North Weald, knew Mr Enkel.

He said: “He was a man of great fun and humility, he was quiet and private, but a very warm and giving man."

Mr Enkel was found unconscious at the terraced house in Alderwood Drive, in Abridge, shortly before 8pm on Thursday, September 25.

His elderly father was at home at the time Mr Enkel was attacked by up to five people. The alarm was raised by a neighbour who noticed that the front door of the house had been forced.

Mr Enkel suffered severe head injuries and died at Queens Hospital, Romford, on Saturday, September 27, without regaining consciousness.

A note posted on the website by Mr Enkel alongside one of his works, entitled The Watcher, reads: "The figures and blocks (in this piece) symbolise ourselves, in a world, not of our own making, that might come crashing down at any minute."

Police have stepped up patrols in the village and have leafleted homes as they continue to appeal for witnesses and information.

They want to speak to anyone who has been leafleting the area seeking work, or who may have seen anything suspicious.
