LEYTONSTONE: 'Revolting' takeaway shut down

4:29pm Monday 27th October 2008

A CARIBBEAN takeaway has been added to the growing tally of restaurants closed down by environmental health officers.

Bamboo Joint, Leytonstone High Road, was slammed by senior officer Pip Broad as being “absolutely filthy” after a visit on October 23.

“There was food debris splattered around - they just hadn’t bothered to clean up,” Mrs Broad said at Waltham Forest Magistrates’ Court on October 27.

“The cooker top was caked in food - it was just revolting.”

She also described how a filthy cloth had been used to wipe surfaces, potentially spreading bacteria all over the premises.

The cloth was then left on top of spring onions, which were used to make a salad to be served to the public.

“There was grease and grime trapped inside the microwave,” Mrs Broad added.

“They tried to tell me it was one day’s dirt but it hadn’t been cleaned for weeks either.”

There was also evidence of poor practice involving meat preparation, as chicken was being chopped outside near rubbish bags, Mrs Broad said.

“I just thought enough is enough and closed them down,” she said.

Proprietors Thomas Farrell, Kevin Griffiths and Dania Fuller were handed an emergency hygiene prohibition order by magistrates and will also have to pay £390 court costs.
