A DETERMINED pensioner is preparing to give up the safety and comfort of South woodford for the jungles of Cambodia where he will help build new homes for the victims of landmines.

David Reekie, of Buckingham Road, is trying to raise the £3,000 he needs to travel to the South East Asian country where he will work alongside other volunteers for the Mines Advisory Group (MAG), a charity which supports ordinance clearance projects worldwide.

The 68 year-old will also trek 40km through remote Siem Reap province as part of the project which is due to begin early in the new year.

I do appreciate his determination but feel that at his age he will get into some sort of difficulty and danger and end up having to get rescued at the great expense of the already burdened taxpayer.

I am sure that he could do some voluntary work closer to home or become a hospital vistor with the whipps Cross League of Freinds or something more suitable than traipsing round the jungle and bush tucker.

I mean, look at Sir Ranalph Fiennes, he has experience in getting rescued almost every time he goes on an adventure and he has been doing it for years.

Good luck whatever you do and I hope you raise your target sum but please consider maybe just donating the money and working for the Charity from here on safe ground.

Mr Small. Go back to the post about Redbridge hospitals. You'll find a question that you have not answered.
