AS A church takes over Walthamstow Stadium for the Christmas period, greyhound lovers have a new glimmer of hope that racing will resume.
An American consortium which already owns dog tracks is poised to open negotiations with the site’s current owners, according to accountants and business advisors Kuhrt Leach.
Partner Richard Leach told the Guardian that the consortium is interested in turning Walthamstow Stadium into a greyhound racing track and a shopping centre.
He said his clients, who are not willing to disclose their identities at this early stage, already have a track record of developing mulit-function commercial sites and are hoping to take advantage of the strong dollar to get the iconic stadium at a good price.
Mr Leach added: “This is quite a good investment for them, they are looking at the medium and long term and Walthamstow is a target area, especially considering the Olympics.”
The Save Our Stow campaign spokesman, Rick Holloway, welcomed the news.
He said: “This is a very promising development and, like all other true greyhound fans, I can now only hope that these talks lead to the return of greyhound racing at Walthamstow Stadium.”
Kuhrt Leach has identified five suitable suitors who have expressed an interest in reviving the stadium’s fortunes but is putting forward one at a time.
The first consortium, which launched a last-minute bid to buy the stadium before it closed, withdrew after deciding the land was not the right size for its needs.

Thank you to the Guardian for continuing to keep this story in the news. A lot of people have been very negative about the Save Our Stow campaigna and accused them of giving up - hardly - they are clearly working tirelessly behind the scenes to attempt to keep a landmark business alive. Enna - it no longer has anything to do with the Chandlers - they sold it to L&Q Housing. People are working hard to save this, and if this bid doesn't succeed others will keep trying. It's scandolous that the Chandlers or L&Q could not have let the track continue in use until they had clarified the situation with planning permission. My heart goes out to all of the hundreds of ex employees without jobs this Christmas.

As for those without a job my heart also goes out to them, but there are also pleanty of others who are out of jobs this Christmas and last year there were people out of work and for years to come this will be the case it's just the way the world roles. The dog's have been closed for some time now so hopefully the people who worked there would have moved onto pastures green and are happy working else where.

You're clearly passionate enough to post a comment on a newspaper forum, but you think there's no point? Yes there are plenty of others, but I mention this as it seems particularly unnecessary when the it was a profitable business and could have been leased. If people believe there's no point in anyone trying to save the site - why do you take the time to write a comment?JuniorCarter wrote: Thank you to the Guardian for continuing to keep this story in the news. Maybe the dogs can run around the tent to spice up sermon?
Once that religious group are in, it will be like trying to get a Jehovahs Witness away from your door.
I bought one of their Advent Calendars from them once. Every time you opened a window there were two of them standing behind it.
