OLYMPICS: Host boroughs demand special logo use

A ROW has broken out over the use of the iconic Olympic logo.

All London boroughs will be able to use the Olympic logo with a ‘host borough’ strap line after a deal was reached between the London Organising Committee and London Councils, the body which represents the capital’s local authorities.

However the five Olympic boroughs – Waltham Forest, Newham, Hackney, Tower Hamlets and Greenwich – insist they should receive preferential treatment.

In a joint statement on behalf of the five boroughs, Sir Robin Wales, Newham’s elected Mayor, said: “We were given host borough status during the bid phase and we are anxious to maintain a status that differentiates us, as we will be hosting the majority of the games.”

But a senior local government figure from a non-host borough has welcomed the move.

Gareth Daniel, Brent’s chief executive, said: “Every London household is paying for the games, so it would be very divisive if different boroughs were to get different logos."

So was it a copyright restriction that prompted LBWF to devise their own Olympic Logo, with only four rings? I was under the impression that 'One ring short of an Olympics' was a pretty good slogan for the Borough. It shows how much respect the Games quangocrats have for their hosts that we should have to beg just to carry their advertising.Just to recap, what we get out of the Olympics is a wind turbine, football pitches turned into a coach park, and the Paralympic archery - and a giant TV screen. Leyton tube, already dangerously congested, is intended to bring thousands of visitors, and no improvements are on the table.

I think the 2012 logo is awful anyway. In the politest terms it looks like a character from the Simpsons performing an indecent act.

You must have a filthy mind to think of that, and do you realise the age of the character involved? You are a very worrying person, I would have that comment removed if I was you as this is a site easily accessed by children. Sick.

Not that there's anything wrong with having a filthy mind, but you're getting yourself morally outraged about an abstract comparison between a logo and fictional character. It was actually pointed out to me in a much cruder and descriptive manner. Clearly you could see it too even with a much more vague description. If the guardian want to remove my comments then that's fine, but I don't see them removing any articles about rapes, stabbings and murders which are also easily accessible by children. Lighten up :-)

Good to see you are still running rings round the council.

You forget the other great legacies: a huge bill at the end of it all and a lot of disappointed people who have had their expectations raised.

I am nonetheless fascinated that the council, with all the other very important things it ought to be focussed on, can find the time to waste on arguing with the rest of the boroughs in London over such a relatively trivial thing.

Back in March 2008 the late Cllr.John Beanse obtained information that showed that the rail authorities were actively considering re-laying and re-opening the Hall Farm Curve.
This is now unlikely to be delivered until the Crossrail Scheme is implemented, after 2012.
The date for the Olympics, a once in a lifetime event for the area is getting closer and closer and the Olympic Park is only 4 miles away from Highams Park for instance, yet it takes well over 30 minutes by public transport to get there.
Without this small length of rail track being in place it’s going to take a couple of hours during the Olympic weeks. It is also needed for all local people who are and will be working there meanwhile.
The Hall Farm Curve is number one priority for this area so can we all start shouting about that?

LMFAO the logo does look rubbish though, I think mainly because it is in a bizarre pink. I have seen it in light blue and it looks a lot better. The logo in pink does look a bit ghetto and reminds me of something done from a grafitti artist.

We DON'T WANT either the Olympics or any associated "logos" at all, thank-you very much!

How much money is this insanity costing Waltham Forest residents?
For nothing at all?

AB, this is about your dirty mind: I've just looked and can't see the resemblance. Why shouldn't noob and others have a laugh about it anyway? Incidentally, cartoon characters don't have an age. This may come as a shock but (brace yourself) they're not real!

The one he is talking about goes to school so is of school age so I would get help if I was him and maybe you should too if you condone such behaviour. Some things are taboo and as a parent of young children I will stand up against such talk and references.

: The point you are trying to make is absurd, and I think you've let your imagination get carried away. Why not put it to better use, thinking of your next user name for example?

So Arvin, where do you stand on the teaching in schools of sexuality issues to primary school children, debated elsewhere on these postings?

Not sure you'll get an answer mdj. I suspect he is already posting under yet another sock puppet account.

I think Mr Shykles is a bit behind the times with his "The Hall Farm Curve is number one priority for this area so can we all start shouting about that?" About two years ago I attended a meeting all all the councillors at the Town Hall (part of a school project on democracy) and a Conservative Councillor with long hair made the point of supporting the Hall Farm Curve saying that "if we had no other Olympic legacy we should have that". He was supported by all three Conservative Councillors and indeed most of the other parties as well. So the Conservatives are definitely behind the idea, whether anything has been done about it is another question.

As to the question of the indecency or otherwise of the logo, I think it is indecent that this borough is prepared to disrupt the environment, invest our money and lose opportunity for some coach parks, "It's Happening Here" yeah right!

Sorry, I meant to say " he was supported by all THE Conservative councillors"

Mr de Large, I think the only possible offer on the table is to reinstate the Hall Farm curve to Stratford as an alternative to the line to Liverpool St (there's a capcity problem, they say, but it didn't seem to apply 25 years ago) so folk in Chingford should be careful what they wish for. It seems outrageous that we should be having to beg for these small things to get any benefit out the whole vast jamboree.
