WALTHAMSTOW: 'It's only a cinema (but I like it)'

ROCK’N’ROLL legend Mick Jagger has got behind the campaign to save the former EMD cinema.

The Rolling Stones played at the Hoe Street venue when it was called the Granada on their first British tour in 1964.

The aging rocker said he was “heartbroken” to learn that the historic music and cinema venue could be converted into a church, after receiving an impassioned plea from a Save the EMD campaigner and McGuffin Film Society member.

Mick Jagger said: "Cinemas and live venues like The Granada in Walthamstow where the Stones played in the early days, learning our craft on the way, are the lifeblood of our cultural history.

“They helped launched British popular music onto a world stage and should continue to function as places of entertainment and enjoyment.

“It's heartbreaking to here about such a beautiful, important historical building and centre of entertainment is being lost to the local community.

"I fully support the campaign to keep it open and provide film, music and the arts for generations to come."

Backing from the star follows support from other celebrities including, former Leytonstone resident Tony Robinson, former Walthamstow resident and actress and screenwriter Meera Syal and veteran politician, broadcaster and historian Tony Benn.

McGuffin spokesman Bill Hodgson said: "We are delighted that Mick Jagger has put his support behind it.

"It has a great heritage, not just as a cinema but as an entertainment venue and people shouldn't forget that it has great potential to be a venue for music as well as a cinema."

The owners of the building, the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God (UCKG), held a public exhibition about their plans to convert the Grade II listed Art Deco building into a church venue and UCKG Help Centre with rooms for private hire.

A planning application for the rennovation of the building is due to be submitted to Waltham Forest Council shortly.

Where in his 'heart-break' is an offer to donate enough money to the Council to Compulsory Purchase it? Nowhere because it is another example of hot air. If you by a copy of 'Old Leyton' or 'Old Walthamstow' there are far more handsome buildings that have been raised to the ground and I am heartbroken to see what once was.

It is all a load of tosh now that it is sold and housing pigeons.

The council have now sold out and cosied up to the Church and there is nothing to stop them now.

The McGuffins should concentrate on the new, soon to be cleared, Arcade site and sort out an open air theatre and use the JCB clearing it to shovel popcorn and poppycock.

I also played at the Granada in the early 60s. My band, The Alexander Patton Group, played Sunday nights before the main feature. Unfortunately we were fired for smoking cigarettes on stage.

Great - finally a multimillionaire who is going to buy it from the church and spend the money on restoring it to a working cinema. Brilliant! It was always unrealistic to think it would go on our council tax bills. How much has he pledged so far?

NKa Tory, noone ever proposed that the Council should buy the cinema: ask the McGuffin people, and they will tell you in great detail what the history of this dispute is. I do share your questioning the apparent taboo on people putting their own money into what they believe in.

Please stop this 'NWO' church from infesting the area.

The church's bishop Edir Macedo (go google Edir Macedo fraud) owns Rede Record, the second biggest tv station in Brazil and is speading his false witness and prophet church all over the globe. There are approximately 2,000 of them already. This is the place that Jesus warned about. Macedo is part of the committee of 300 who are looking for world domination and NWO.
False prophet Edir Macedo is an illuminati billionaire who owns a lear jet and has been said to have major involvement in the drug trade of Columbia, which is now recking havoc on and ruining the border of the U.S. and Mexico..
The church's pastors are mind controlled puppets who practise extortion. Macedo himself has been jailed for extortion.
