WALTHAMSTOW: Another filthy restaurant closed down

ANOTHER filthy restaurant has been added to the growing tally of premises closed down by environmental health officers.

Officers visited China Ocean, in High Street, Walthamstow for a routine inspection on June 17 and found a thick build-up of grease and food in the kitchen and storeroom.

Cooked ribs, rice and noodles were also being stored at room temperature on “filthy cardboard” and bluebottle flies and cobwebs were spotted where the food was kept.

Chefs were also found to have a poor awareness of food safety, using dirty cloths to wipe surfaces.

Their t-shirts and trousers were stained with grease and the wash hand basin was encrusted with old food, with no soap or paper towels.

Magistrates handed down an emergency hygiene prohibition order on June 19, meaning the restaurant must remain closed until it is brought up to standard.

They also ordered a total of £635 costs to be paid.

Cabinet member for community safety, enforcement and protection Cllr Afzal Akram said: “The vast majority of our restaurants and cafes are well run, clean and hygienic but we will take action against those that don't meet reasonable standards.

“If residents have any concerns about the standard of hygiene in the borough's food premises they should contact our food safety team.”

It is beyond belief that the law allows practically anyone, untrained to open up selling food without basic hygiene standards in force.

People can die eating bad food. Does the government take this issue seriously enough? You cannot sell booze without I licence, why should one be able to sell food without one?

Great job again by the Council though, well done and keep up the great wok!

Another reason I rarely eat out. Next time you go into a restaurant, try accidentally walking into their kitchen. Chances are high you'll walk out without eating there. Try it!

Will not be Szechuan this takeaway. However, maybe someone can recommend it to Harry Cohen for a free meal.

I completely agree. No one should be able to set themselves up selling food without a licence and training.
However, I don't understand why these people do not have even a basic grasp of straightforard hygiene. Most people can understand that dirt and food is a dangerous combination. My feeling is that they do not care whether or not they poisen their customers.

We will take action against those that don't meet reasonable standards.... I don't feel that the word "resonable" is very reassuring, still I don't suppose anyone who chooses to select the High St as there eating destination is that bothered.

Having seen how they dump their waste in the street in front of and behind their restaurant I am not surprised by this at all.
Distgusting!

lol @ accidentely walk in the kitchen, you never know you may end up being cooked doing that and end up as "todays special".
LMFAO @ Jonathan went there for dinner. I guess your regretting it now, you could only imagine this is the tip of the iceberg.

How the H**l are residents to know if food hygiene standards are poor out of sight in the kitchen? That's what the environmental health inspectors are there for!

maybe the council could install cctv with a monitor in the shop so we can see the food being cooked, or better still take the dividing wall between kitchen and shop area so we can actually watch the chefs cooking this i can assume should be the way forward.

When this place opened as a noodle bar several years ago the food was great. I ate there regularly and never had any problems but since it changed names/ownership the foul looking buffet counter in the window has been the best advertisement to eat somewhere else.
