CHINGFORD: Former Woolies to become 99p Store

THE former Woolworths shop in Chingford Mount is to become a 99p Store.

The shop, in Old Church Road, is to reopen at 9am on Friday July 3 and will employ about 30 people.

A spokeswoman for 99p Stores said: “The nearest other store is Walthamstow and it’s the success of this one that has led to the Chingford opening.”

The new store will be one of 89 across London and the UK, about 15 of which are former branches of Woolworths.

The spokeswoman added that queues of hundreds of people hoping to snap up cut-price products were expected.

A promotional event will also be held in which one customer will be made a “Very Important Pennysaver”.

The winner will cut the red ribbon at the official opening and will also be given a 99-second “trolley dash” in the store.

Woolworths went into administration at the end of last year, closing all 800 of its UK stores and cutting tens of thousands of jobs.

The Chingford store officially ceased trading on January 2 this year amid swarms of bargain hungry shoppers, keen to buy up the last of its stock.

The former Woolworths shops have been specifically targeted for takeover by 99p Stores and there are plans for a further 40 to be reopened by the chain before the end of the year.

Wow!! That'll make The Mount really upmarket now..........not!!!

So I assume they'll close the other shop over the road or will there be 2 of them open? Plus Poundland, or whatever its called, in Cherrydown Avenue & the other one recently opened along Old Church Road.

I cant wait!!!

I sympathise with the people of Chingford. Walthamstow High Street is a string of pound shops and betting shops these days.

A council that did its job would encourage a better range of shops, before the place goes so downmarket that no trader would want to move into it.

Exactly we don't need any more pound shop, pound saver, pound what ever. Chingford mount is gradually turning into a miserable looking place.

Correction, Chingford Mount is already a complete dump. I only went there for Woolworths. Does anyone else miss that.

I still do. Went past it Saturday. I always think it must be a mistake that its closed & expect it to suddenly open again.

It may have had its faults but it was quite harmless. I'm one of those 'oldies' that grew up with Woolies.

What sort of accountants did they have that they couldnt see what was happening with the business & could have made some sort of effort to save it?

I think its the usual case of the little Britain Chingord mentality coming into play here, 99p stores have proved very popular all over the country, especailly in a lot of good Essex towns which is what Chingford still aspires to be, and to be honest the 99p is no a huge leap away from Woolworths anyway.

Why is there such a hate towards 99p stores, I think they are a handy chain store group. As for Tesco, there is one just down the road at Edmonton on the A406.
Heartly, I think a Woolworths building would be far to big for a butcher, baker or candlestick maker in Chingford Mount. If you feel that way you open one and see how much you would loose out.
Ferdy what a foolish coment about saying it would make the mount upmarket. That part of Chingford is far from anywhere near upmarket (so did Woolworths make it upmarket??) Never though woolworths was upmarket in anyway, the stuff sold inside was hardly John Lewis.
Chingford Mount is full of yob hoody Asbo youth generation, plying the streets daily up to no good.
As for poundsaver, poundplus etc. the variety is no where near that of 99p stores. It is like saying the small greengrocers that often have supermarket on there shop name is an alternative to Tesco, Sainsburys etc. it simply is NOT.

This appears to be very similar to the situation with the opening of International Suprmarket opening at the empty Woolies in Gerorge Lane...........

the way things are at the moment at least there is someone willing to use that shop rather than it being empty for ages and ages. ok so its a bit depressing it has to be a pound shop, but then thats pretty much what woolies was like anyway.

at least the shop will be open, too many high streets are becoming desolate with empty shops everywhere...
